Drunk in the Spirit |
By Mishel
One of huge characteristic of the apostolic and prophetic movement is being drunk in the spirit. “Have another drink” they shout, “Come and get some” and “More Lord”. However do we really want to fill our glass with this wine? The truth is that nowhere in scripture does God equate the Holy Spirit with staggering, loss of control, disrupted motor function, slurred speech, confusion, disorientation, or falling. In fact it appears scripture supports the OPPOSITE. We are admonished to stay sober and be vigilant- and all the more as we see the end approaching.
Of course it is not surprising that their followers would not know exactly what the Bible says for this movement discourages the use of scripture and exchanges this for “progressive” or “new” revelation from their prophets, and apostles. Questioning is not encouraged lest we touch the Lord’s anointed.
Inevitably these verses in Acts 2:14-16 are used to prove that “getting drunk in the Spirit” is ok and even encouraged and sanctioned by God! Is this the Truth? Let’s look at the scripture.
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16
The reason the accusation of drunkenness was leveled against these men is because they were speaking in other tongues. The mocking bystanders, having nothing in their past experience to explain this strange phenomena thought they must be drunk. However, Peter clearly states THEY WERE NOT DRUNK. He flat out refutes it. He very easily could have said they are drunk but not with wine but he does not. He closes the door on this assumption altogether and states that they are not drunk –period.
It would seem that we are admonished in scripture to remain sober and vigilant and all the more as the end approaches. Consider the following scriptures.
- 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
- 1 Peter 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
- Titus 2:6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
- 1 Peter 1:3 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
Is spiritual drunkenness a blessing? However in scripture, God sending drunkenness is always a sign of judgment in the Bible!
- Deuteronomy 28:29 24He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way. 25They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.
- Psalm 107:25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof. 26They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble. 27They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end.
- Isaiah 19:14 The LORD hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit.
- Isaiah 24:20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
- Isaiah 29:9 Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink. 10For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.
- Isaiah 51:17 Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.
- Isaiah 51:17 Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine:
- Isaiah 63:6 And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.
- Jeremiah 48:26 Make ye him drunken: for he magnified himself against the LORD: Moab also shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision.
- 1 Thessalonians: 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 7For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
According to Thomas Shepard (1605-1649), an American Puritan minister and a significant figure in early colonial New England, “Spiritual Drunkenness Occurs as the Result of the Excessive Drinking of the Pleasures of Sin. When the wills and affections of men drink at fountains of forbidden pleasure, God will cause them to experience spiritual drunkenness. When they insist on imbibing the things their hearts should be weaned from, things which should be bitter to them, God will give them up to this. In this sense the Prophet calls the Kings, Priests and People, "The drunkards of Ephraim" (Is 28:1; Jer 25:15-18). The Lord puts His cup of just judgments into the hands of those he intends to destroy and bids them take their pleasure in sins. They lose all fear of death and judgment even when both are at their very doors.”
We are told that one of the main things that will characterize the end of the age is deception. Jesus warns us that the deception will come in his name and will be accompanied by miracles signs and wonders. He further tell us that these mighty feats will be so convincing that even those who truly know him (God’s elect) will find it nearly impossible to tell the difference! This will set the stage for the “lawless one” (2Thessalonians 2:8, 9, 10) and the coming one world church. In fact the revelation of this lawless one will be accompanied by all manner of miracles!
The Bible tells also tells us that coming one world church will shares the same mindset of as that of the Great Harlot! The Bible says they will be drunk with the wine of her fornications. Why was she called a fornicator? She had not remained true to her Husband (GOD) and had run after other deities! Her drunkenness was therefore equated with idolatry. Thus the end time church will be literally drunk on idolatry. It is no coincidence that all mystical and Eastern religions have the spiritual drunkenness phenomena.
In light of this I ask you, do you really want “another drink”, will you really say to Him,”More Lord?”

I am shocked at how little
I am shocked at how little you know your scriptures. You seem to have some knowledge without wisdom.
First of all, how would you know what the onlookers were'actually' refering to in Acts 2? And Peter would obviously clearly state that they were not drunk......because they weren't drunk as they 'supposed'?
Being drunk in the Spirit is not being drunk at all. How on earth can you compare being intoxicated with alcohol to being drunk in the Spirit anyway???. Alcohol will make you lose your self control, lose sound judgement, give you a confused state of mind, make you do things you would not normally do. The Spirit does not do this! Big difference Mishel. Being drunk/filled with the Spirit does not make you lose sound judgement, self control or give you a confused state of mind. Have you ever been overcome by the Spirit to this extent in your life? I doubt it, but i though i'd ask. I have, so how would you know?
It's interesting the scriptures you have mentioned which in most God uses drunkeness as an example of man lost way. In the others you have mentioned, it referes to alcohol.
Covenient how you leave out Ephesians 5 v18: "do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit". Why would Paul mention both these in the same breath? why have the comparison of being drunk with wine or filled with the Spirit?
I am also shocked at how you can refer to the bible admonishing us to be sober and vigilant when this has nothing to do with being 'drunk' in the Spirit? The word 'sober' is used a lot in scripture as a means of self control, and a comparison to being drunk with wine/alcohol as this makes you lose self control.
Incidently, in Acts 2 v 14 they had to stand up..interesting.
"How on earth can you compare
"How on earth can you compare being intoxicated with alcohol to being drunk in the Spirit anyway???"
That article was pointing out that apostolic and prophetic movement make being Spirit filled = to drunk with alcohol by the terms and statements they use. Which the writer of the article points out is unBiblical.
"Alcohol will make you lose your self control, lose sound judgement, give you a confused state of mind, make you do things you would not normally do."
Yep thats what happens at these "revivals". Barking, clucking and loss of control of the body functions. However its not alcohol but a demonic force.
Exactly Jillybean! When
Exactly Jillybean! When pressed that's what they will state to. "Oh it's just the Holy Spirit, different people will behave in different ways when He touches them." Yeah, whatever.
pray fro wisdom when reading
pray fro wisdom when reading the scriptures.
quote '..this movement
quote '..this movement discourages the use of scripture..'
Back that up please.
Do not say things unless you have evidence to back this up. All i find on these ridiculous sites are opinions, words put in their mouths and twisting the truth.
If you can provide a video or evidential document that has them discouraging folk from using the scripture, then do so. otherwise watch what you say. God warns you not to be wise in your own opinion in His word.
How dare you suggest that in
How dare you suggest that in Acts 2 that the reason the onlookers thought they were drunk was because they were speaking in tongues.
Within my church we encourage the speaking and singing in tongues and it is beautiful. when someone speaks in a tongue it's more like another language. It's nothing like a drunk and would require a lot more than this to suggest they were to onlookers.
Is it with interpretation?
Is it with interpretation?
Don't be drunk with wine, but
Don't be drunk with wine, but be filled with the Spirit... Not "be drunk in the Spirit"...
The Holy Spirit is not a force or a substance, but rather a person of the Trinity. Being filled with the Spirit goes beyond reason, but never against it. Also the results of being filled never contradict Holy Scripture.
look just a few lines above
look just a few lines above that in 2:7-13
maybe THATS why. you know... since it IS right there in the last two verses.
i didn't anywhere read the author of the article imply that speaking in tongues was somehow not of the Spirit.
no there never is
no there never is
Well Done Good and faithful
Well Done Good and faithful Servant Mishel
I shall add more to what you have said As the Lord Jesus is not blind to what is going on and those who have chose the Road of the Great whore of Babylon who was indeed drunk on the blood of the saints (Wine)
Jezeble killed Naboth for his Vineyard and she was given a time to repent and because she has not she was thrown into a sickbed with her fornicators. Is 28 speaks of vomit on the tables and the Priests drunk with wine and vomit on the table. There is absolutely no references to being drunk in the Spirit only being of sober mind
with the fruit of self control not total lack of control. 11 Peter 2 :14 22 speaks of these people that have eyes full of harlotry like the great harlot that promise you liberty when they themselves are slaves of depravity and it would be better that they did not know Christ Jesus and compares them to a dog return to his vomit and a sow is washed only to wallow again in the mud. Yes truly ignorant people would return to the folly and leave the first love Jesus as REV says: And thus their lampstand is removed REV 2 :4. Shall i pamper you more or stand bold against you who are depraved of mind. Who are not prepared in the word and rivers of oil has not come out of the rock for you JOB 29:6. Who is it that darkens the Lord Jesus council against a true believer such as Mishel.
You without substance with your stammering drunk tongue who cannot put two sentences together; Yes the demons in you get drunk on the blood of the true Saints rather then sober up. Even Thomas Sheperd warned you in 1605- 1649 A true American Puritan who spoke out on 'SPIRTUAL DRUNKENESS" yes you drunkards of epraimJer 25:15-18 he said even back then this occurs as the result of the excessive drinking of the pleasures of sin.And will set the stage for the lawless one; accompanied by all manners of miracles 2 Thess 2:8,9.
Yes the Lord has told you to examine yourself before you take of his wine ;and return and repent lest you become sick. Are you like Heroditia that require John the baptist head and his blood to drink too.
Hosea chap 4 talks all about you. Shall you joke as they do about God truly mocking God as they are drunk on the blood of christ with the new wine even as the great harlot is who even John marvel at how she has decieved the nations and you churches are inside those nations greatly decieved
How is it that our God is so confused that he refers to being drunk in the flesh as a time when you get sick and robbed and yet as you are getting robbed in the Spirit of even all that you have you cannot discern the difference.
YOu have not return to your first love but played the harlot as my word said and went after your love the true believer for her oil and her wine . How is it as Paul said that you are joined to a harlot God forbid lest you.
become one flesh. !st Corinthians 6:16-19 Repent sinners of mere knowledge but lacking the practical walk
of faith EPH 3 :19l
Even the Lord says to you God has not given me a Spirit of fear but of sound mind.DOES NOT SAY DRUNK MIND
And Lord has given you up to a depraved mind as in the days of Noah.
How can you have the fruit of self -control when you are totally out of control barking like the dog you are in your vomit.
These men are NOT DRUNK as Peter said and he could tell the whole story of the bible just as Stephen could
being of a greatly sober mind in the true anointing totally delivered of demons and not drunk and stammering like you with a stammering tongue so that the true prophets have to speak to you a little at a time you drunks.
here a little there a little.
!Pet 5:8 be sober for SATAN comes to devour you. You are the host for Jezebel who drinks of your wine getting the demons drunk where as a true man of God knows he infact get greatly high in being sober all knowing like his true Father in heaven.
Well this is only a knat of truth for you to swallow: If you repent I will give you the other 90% of the scriptures that support what I say.
Come out of the HARLOT and its FALSE PROPHETS because time is truly short and God truly loves you but abhors your foolish sinful nature.
